FAQ'S
Though we strive to make your first visit to Cypress Point Yoga Studio an inviting and welcoming experience, we understand that questions and nerves can arise when attending a new workout – especially yoga. Below we answer some of the common questions that arise about this practice.
What is Yoga?
Yoga is the Sanskrit word that translates to yoke or union of the mind, body and spirit. Yoga is an ancient practice intended to help reduce the monkey mind and create more peaceful and meditative state. Yoga is a secular practice that is not associated with any one faith. In Yoga we honor all religions and allow each student to bring into the practice what they choose.
What should I wear/bring to a yoga class?
Please bring a water bottle, towel and yoga mat if you have one. We offer these items but as you practice more and more you will be much happier with your own. Arrive about 10-15 minutes early for each class and wear fitted clothing that allows free movement of the body.
What are some of the benefits of Yoga?
Yoga can provide increased flexibility and strength. Yoga also increases circulation and improves sleep patterns. The yoga postures lubricate the joints, ligaments and tendons and massage all the organs. Yoga also offers muscle toning and detoxification.
What kind of results can I expect?
Each person will respond differently to yoga dependent upon ones age, abilities, physical condition and genetics. The best way to measure your "success" in yoga is to notice the difference in how you feel and the progress you achieve in your practice instead of setting unreachable goals for yourself. Yoga is a journey, not a destination. It is meant to be something you can practice for the rest of your life, so enjoy your path!
Do you have to be flexible to do yoga?
Flexibility is something you work on in yoga, but not something that you have to have when you begin your yoga practice. Yoga increases flexibility in the body by lengthening and expanding the muscles. Many of us are lacking in flexibility due to our sedentary jobs, and with yoga we can release the toxins that build up in our shortened muscles. As many studies have concluded, one cannot be strong without being flexible.
What does "Namaste" mean?
We often end our class with the word "Namaste." This is simply an acknowledgement from one being to another offering mutual reverence. "Nama" means bow; "as" means I; and "te" means you. Therefore, Namasté literally means "bow me you" or "I bow to you." This gesture is a deep form of respect.
